Diet Changes

I had a few people ask if I feel “betrayed” by the cancer or if maybe healthy eating is all in vain and we are all doomed. So with my husband’s permission I thought I would briefly address that here. For years I have had a simplistic view of cancer; that is it a matter of toxicity and deficiency. We are ALL exposed to toxins and they come in many forms: chemicals, stress, negative emotions, processed foods, tobacco, pesticides,  bad relationships etc. There are certainly many things that we CAN do to eliminate our exposure to toxins, but there are also many things that we CAN’T do. One area that we can control is our nutritional deficiency. There is NO QUESTION whatsoever that fruits, vegetables and whole grains can keep our bodies from entering that “deficient” state (forget the carbs, proteins, and fats – I’m talking phytochemicals, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals). That said, my husband unfortunately has not embraced my views on nutrition. He drank Coke/Diet Coke everyday for 20 years (except for the 30 days where I bet him he couldn’t abstain and ended up losing $1000 to him)…..and I used the word “drank” because according to him he’s done. He was like most standard guys who like burgers and fries and Rocky Road Ice Cream. He wasn’t indulgent but he didn’t take steps to avoid the crap food either. So what that leaves me with right now is hope. That as we do our best to eliminate the toxins and super-charge his immune system….and seek the advice of a knowledgeable oncologist….that we will be able to beat this awful disease. Yesterday was a tough day for me emotionally. The realization that because there is cancer in his liver he is classified Stage IV. So I share with you a scripture that brought me comfort: “Therefore, hold on thy way, and the priesthood shall remain with thee; for their bounds are set, they cannot pass. Thy days are known, and thy years shall not be numbered less; therefore, fear not what man can do, for God shall be with you forever and ever.”
